In response to COVID-19, Rise Together began a partnership with Hoos First Look, a University of Virginia residency program, that piloted a 12-week virtual mentoring program designed to provide first-generation, low-income students at the University of Virginia (UVA) with weekly virtual mentorship, college readiness support, and college, scholarship and financial aid guidance.
Hoos Rise Together ProgramThe mission was to create a pipeline of diverse and talented UVA students. Rise Together launched a new virtual initiative alongside Hoos First Look, called Hoos Rise Together. This collaboration provided 10 first-generation low-income students with comprehensive weekly virtual mentorship, college readiness support, and college, scholarship and financial aid guidance. In addition, Rise Together provided 34 UVA student mentors with weekly intensive training, professional development and support needed to effectively guide students towards their postsecondary aspirations.

The 2020-21 vision is to offset this period of social isolation by creating a sustainable and scalable pathway for rising high school seniors to connect with diverse current UVA students, maintain a positive mindset, thrive academically and ultimately attend the postsecondary school of their choice. We aim to further our model by incorporating UVA alumni as mentors for current and incoming first-generation, low-income students to help them navigate the tricky processes of selecting a major, finding a job/internship, and networking.
